Stroller for Older Child

by Dawn

Wondering what moms use when they take kids on a long run. I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old that I need to take with me on 6+ miles run or walks.
We've been using a bike trailer but it's too small now.

InStep Run Around 2 Double Jogging Stroller or InStep Safari Swivel Double Jogging Stroller, maybe? it has a very affordable price, though.

In-step Safari

Safari/Instep.

I love this for runs anywhere from 1-6 or so miles. This is what I love about it.

The spaces in the individual seats are large, so there is plenty of room to move around. It's not great as a regular stroller, but it's great for running.

The sunshades move individually and the seats lay down individually so one kid can sleep or relax, while the other reads/plays games, etc.

Both seats have a snack tray & cup holder.

The seats are VERY separated so that your kids can't torture each other while you run. (What? am I the only one?)

Lastly, it isn't super expensive like a Bob (many of my friends have them) and I love mine more for the reasons I stated above.

The only thing that is annoying about this stroller is that you need to order a tube for the front tire that has a slanted or right angle tire valve. Otherwise the front (tiny) tire is virtually impossible to pump up!

Good luck!

more tips...
by: Anna

A lot of moms are saying they do the bike things. Some even say it can be a speed / interval workout trying to race with your kid and a really fun way to exercise / spend time together.

Another person is recommending a track near a playground where you can have your kids play and run around the track. Speaking of, my kid sometimes even likes to run on the track with me. I forgot about that, think I'm going to try that again when this rain clears up.

Here are a few suggestions
by: Anna

I posted this in another running mom group that I'm in and the suggestions other moms had were to have your kid ride in a bike alongside you or join a gym that has daycare and run on the treadmill. The bike thing only seems to work for short distances because the kid gets tired.

I sometimes see mothers running in the park with their kid riding a scooter alongside them. Usually I will hear the mother giving the kid a landmark to stop at and wait for their mother if they want to ride ahead.

Some moms say they push their kids in a double jogging stroller or bike trailer up to 3 and 5 years old.

My son is 3 1/2 and still rides in the jogging stroller for up to 6-8 mile runs if he's in a good mood. Sometimes I can get him to last longer if I break it up with some playground time, or even let him get out and run for a little while 'till he gets tired. Once a week, I leave him with his daddy so I can go on a 10+ mile run, or I run during my lunch break at work while he is in daycare.
