Breastfeeding Mom Getting Ready for NYC Marathon - Looking for People with Experience

by Christine
(New York, NY)

I am the mother of a five-month old baby who I have been breastfeeding exclusively. I am also preparing to run the NYC marathon in November, and starting to get nervous about how to handle my milk supply. I am planning to pump right before I have to check my bag, which will probably be about six hours before I see my baby again. I have gone six hours without nursing (in the middle of the night), but I am wondering if I should be prepared to pump or nurse on the sidelines during the race. I am getting nervous that all of the movement and hydration will lead me to fill up faster than normal. I have not had any issue during long runs thus far; my longest distance has been 20 miles -- but I want to be prepared on race day so that I won't be in excruciating pain. Any advice would be very much appreciated!!

I AM RUNNING TOO!
by: Dina Lindner

I am still nursing and running this sunday's NYC marathon. I am more nervous about pumping in public than the actual run. Good luck and let me know if you would like to meet up at the start for some support!

I have experience w/ this very thing! :-)

Hi Christine, congratulations on your five-month-old and on keeping up your training while nursing and taking care of a newborn. I also ran the NYC marathon when my son was eight months old and I was nursing him full time. You sound like you are way more prepared then I was. I pushed him in the jogging stroller on all my training runs and stopped to nurse him along the way. For the marathon, I brought a cheap pump that I didn't mind throwing away (I actually bought it the night before and had never used it before) and it was quite hilarious sitting there cross-legged on the floor with 40,000 other freezing cold runners trying to figure out how to work it before the marathon. I was running with two friends of mine and they held up sweatshirts around me to try to give me some privacy. I didn't even check it in my bag. I just pumped like 20 minutes before I started running and then threw it away. It would have been nice to have it at the finish but my sore legs were screaming much louder than my sore boobs by then. It was totally worth the experience. You can read more about it in my old blog. Is this your first time running the NYC marathon?
