Training for a 5k

I have been training on the treadmill. Usually I try to jog at about 5.3-5.6 mph. Is that good enough? How do you try and lengthen your time long enough to run a 5k?

I have found that if I slower my mph a little I can run further. Then you can slowly pick up your pace again.

Interval Training
by: Anonymous

Try interval training as well (both indoors and outdoors). For example, jog at your normal pace for 5 minutes, then sprint for 30 seconds, and then back to your normal pace, and so on. You can then increase the time of the sprints with each run and on some runs just go normal pace but extend the amount of time you run. Switching it back and forth like this you will be able to increase your pace and your distance. For other tips on health and nutrition, visit my website www.fruitful-living.net.

I have done 3.5 a few times. Sometimes other days I only do 2 miles. I try to jog 5 times a week with 2 days off. I actually have jogged 3 times outside. On Saturday, April 24th, I jogged outside 2 1/2 miles in 30 minutes. Race for the Cure is May 15th. I will be going a little further outside at least 2 times per week hoping to get to 3.2 miles. My goal is to jog that race. Thanks for your comments. Helen

Outside vs. Treadmill
by: Anna

It sounds like you have a good pace going.

How many miles at a time are you running on the treadmill? How often?

As far as running on the treadmill, you can train for a race running on the treadmill, but if you can get in at least a couple runs outside, I would recommend that. It feels much different running outside than running on the treadmill.

If you are sticking to the schedule, it is recommended that you have an incline of at least 1.0 to make it more like running outside.
