Completeing a Triatholon 9 weeks Pregnant

by Liz Gaulin
(Chicago, IL)

I have been training for 5 months for the Trek Triathlon. My first one! I was very excited and have been training really hard. Then I find out I'm pregnant.

I had some major surgery in September and my doctor told me to start trying for a family because it may take longer than usual. Well that was not the case, it only took two months to conceive. I had a miscarriage the previous month and then conceived the second month.

I am still going to do the triathlon on July 12, 2009. I am still training but at a lower intensity. So I won't get to do it for time, but I will have a great story to tell the baby when he or she comes.

I think the working out has helped with morning sickness tremendously!

Congratulations! I just did my first sprint tri and yes, I did it at 9 weeks on the dot; started training before I found out. Definitely do-able, but you'll likely have to swallow your pride and shoot for a slower time rather than your fastest time. As my OB said "do it to complete it for the experience, not to win it."

Kudos; I think future baby would love the story.

I recently ran in my first race ever a few weeks ago. I had been training for several months and a few weeks before the race...when I couldn't get over the "flu" I had, I found out I was pregnant (with my second). I slowed my pace and ran the race anyway. I was 10 weeks. It was a relay race with a team of 12 that went 31 hours. It was rough but I am so glad I did it and like you, am excited to be able to tell my little baby. Good luck!
